GRICE`S MAXIMS PRINCIPLES

This assumption explains two thing:

1. Why speec errors are often ignored in converation

2. Why we can find meaning in statements wich on the surface seem ridicolous

The maxims of conversation

MAXIMS OF QUANTITY:

is when you make your contribution as informative as required but you don`t say more information than in required

MAXIMS OF QUALITY:

You don`t say what you believe to be false and don`t say that for wich your lack adequate evidence.

MAXIMS OF RELATION:

Be relevant

MAXIMS OF MANNER:

*Avoid obscurity of expression

*Avoid ambiguity

*Be brief (avoid unnecesary prolitity)

*Be orderly
